Michele Balsamo

Dr. Michele Balsamo received his Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology in 2003 and his Master’s degree in Medical, Molecular and Celluler Biotechnology in 2005 from “Sapienza” University of Rome. In 2009 he received the Ph.D. in Immunology, “Sapienza” University of Rome, while working as visiting student at David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge USA. At MIT, first as visiting student and then as postdoctoral research fellow, Dr. Balsamo investigated the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying cancer cell migration, invasion and metastasis. In 2012 he was a fellow of the Sant’Anna School for Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy, working on cancer biology and space biology projects. Since 2014 he is part of the Research and Development Area of Kayser Italia, supporting the development and test of experiment hardware allowing scientific experimentation in Space, focusing on the understanding of the effects of the space environment on biological and physiological systems. Since 2018 he manages the Company’s Research and Development Area. In Kayser Italia, he acts as Project Scientist and Biotechnology Specialist for different National and International programs under the aegis of ASI, ESA, private space contracts or the European Commission. He was responsible for work packages and Project Manager for Kayser Italia for the ASI ReBUS project (In-situ Resource Bio-Utilization to support life on Space) and Project Manager for various projects financed by public and private bodies, the Italian Ministry of  Economy (MiSE), and the Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy (MiMIT). He is a member of the Scientific Committee (since 2024) and the Steering Committee of the Italian Institute of Astrobiology-Network of National Astrobiology Laboratories (since 2019). He serves as a reviewer for several journals, and to date is the author of 36 peer-reviewed publications (full list at https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2315-4761).   

Il dr. Michele Balsamo ha conseguito la laurea in Biotecnologie nel 2003 e la laurea specialistica in Biotecnologie Mediche, Molecolari e Cellulari nel 2005 presso l'Università "Sapienza" di Roma. Nel 2009 ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Immunologiche, presso l'Università "Sapienza" di Roma, mentre lavorava come visiting student presso il David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge USA. Al MIT, prima come visiting student e poi come postdoctoral research fellow, il dr. Balsamo ha studiato i meccanismi cellulari e molecolari alla base della migrazione, dell'invasione e della metastasi delle cellule tumorali. Nel 2012 è stato assegnista di ricerca presso la Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa, lavorando a progetti di biologia del cancro e di biologia spaziale. Dal 2014 fa parte dell'Area Ricerca e Sviluppo di Kayser Italia, supportando lo sviluppo e test di hardware sperimentale a supporto della sperimentazione scientifica nello Spazio, focalizzandosi sulla comprensione degli effetti dell'ambiente spaziale sui sistemi biologici e fisiologici. Dal 2018 gestisce l'Area Ricerca e Sviluppo dell'azienda. In Kayser Italia ricopre il ruolo di Project Scientist e Biotechnology Specialist per diversi programmi nazionali ed internazionali, sotto l'egida dell’ASI, dell’ ESA, contratti spaziali privati o della Commissione Europea. È stato responsabile di pacchetti di lavoro e Project Manager per Kayser Italia del progetto ASI ReBUS (In-situ Resource Bio-Utilization to support life on Space) e Project Manager per diversi progetti finanziati da enti pubblici e privati, dal Ministero dell'Economia (MiSE) e dal Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy (MiMIT). È membro del Comitato Scientifico (dal 2024) e del Comitato Direttivo dell'Istituto Italiano di Astrobiologia-Rete dei Laboratori Nazionali di Astrobiologia (dal 2019).
